These are compression rapids, formed when a lot of water is forced through a narrow channel. It looks like there are rocks just beneath the surface, but the water here is 200 feet deep.

We visited Hovey Pond Park in Glens Falls, NY with Diane Cordell. I saw this flower stem leaning in the water, and snapped a quick shot of the symmetry.

The Constitution is being renovated in anticipation of the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812. Most of the rigging and all of the masts are down, but there’s still some netting up.
